Did You Know?

Queen Victoria collected insects.

Benjamin Franklin enjoyed swimming.

Albert Einstein was obsessed with music.

George Washington loved to camp under the stars and canoe.

Orville and Wilbur Wright are known for inventing the airplane, but their passion was bicycles.

Joan of Arc‘s hobbies and interests centered around her work as a military leader and her belief in God.

Winston Churchill took up painting later in life, claiming that the hobby rescued him “in a most trying time.”

We each face trying times. Hobbies can help to slow us down, clear our heads, and restore emotional balance.

Why Hobbies Matter

Hobbies provide natural ways to develop one’s character, increase in knowledge, and refine practical skills:

Character Development

Spending focused time on hobbies develops virtues such as perseverance, humility, and leisure. These virtues develop character and enhance one’s life well into the future.

Perseverance, humility, and leisure: we need to grow in these virtues if we want to develop and grow as citizens of the world. Perseverance teaches us to show up and keep doing our best. Humility teaches us to stand back up when we fall, not focused on the “looks” of what we do but on why we do them. Leisure helps us relax all while building up the virtues of perseverance and humility at the same time.

Increase in Knowledge

Learning about a subject of interest increases one’s ability to retain information learned. This truly is the most fun and efficient way to gain an education.

Exposing my children to a vast smorgasbord of culture expressed through art, music, theater, architecture, history, and travel was one of the most profoundly influential foundations for their intellect, faith, and engagement in academics.

Sally clarkson, awaking wonder

Practical Skills

Engaging in hobbies is a natural way to develop practical life skills. The ability to create art, the confidence to begin coding, the decision to pick up a hammer and start building.

Creating. Beginning. Building.

These are but three of countless skills developed through hobbies.

“Hobbies that demand skill, habits that set goals and limits, personal interests, and especially inner discipline help to make leisure what it is supposed to be – a chance for re-creation.”

Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi

Conclusion

Teen hobbies and interests are the pathway to excellence. Encourage your teen to focus on their hobbies and interests. They’ll focus and fixate for long periods of time, fiddle and formulate new connections, and even falter, flounder, and fail on occasion, but it’s unlikely that you’ll see them fold.

Why?

Because “a true passion that burns within your soul is one that can never be put out.” — Zach Toelke
