This Beautiful World

As parents lead their children into the beautiful world of nature, the world manifests its wonderful resources. As you begin your study of trees, consider this quote:

To lead a little child into this beautiful world and open his eyes to the marvels which await him, is the most precious privilege. He could stumble along without leadership, and he would see many things. But how much a guide is worth! Parents may well put themselves to great pains for the sake of introducing their children to Nature.

No effort will bring any greater reward. They may open these young eyes to the color of the birds, to the varieties of the trees, to the delicate beauty of the commonest wayside flower, to the intricate traceries of a butterfly’s wing, or the grace of a clinging vine, to the glory of the sunset and the grandeur of the lightning. Children may be taught to distinguish bird notes and name the common birds. Their eyes may be trained to the harmonies of color and the marvelous detail in the frost and the snowflake.

No child will be cruel to birds or insects or animals of any sort, if he is properly introduced to them and learns their true place in God’s marvelous universe. A sensitiveness to the beauty of the world and the infinite love manifested in its wonderful resources, means much to develop the mature character. This is wanting in many a man and woman because there was no one to guide their early years.

Redwood Trees Music

This land is your land, this land is my land. From California to the New York island. From the Redwood forest to the Gulf Stream waters. This land was made for you and me.

Woody Guthrie, This Land Is Your Land

This Land Is Your Land Song Lyrics

This land is your land, and this land is my land
From California to the New York island
From the Redwood Forest to the Gulf Stream waters
This land was made for you and me

As I went walking that ribbon of highway
And I saw above me that endless skyway
I saw below me that golden valley
This land was made for you and me

I roamed and rambled, and I’ve followed my footsteps
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts
All around me, a voice was sounding
This land was made for you and me

There was a big, high wall there that tried to stop me
A sign was painted said “Private Property”
But on the backside, it didn’t say nothing
This land was made for you and me

When the sun come shining, then I was strolling
And the wheat fields waving, and the dust clouds rolling
The voice was chanting as the fog was lifting
This land was made for you and me

This land is your land, and this land is my land
From California to the New York island
From the Redwood Forest to the Gulf Stream waters
This land was made for you and me

Redwood Trees Quotes

Be inspired by the following quotes and the individuals who shared them:

Ideas are like seeds, apparently insignificant when first held in the hand. Once firmly planted, they can grow and flower into almost anything at all, a cornstalk, or a giant redwood, or a flight across the ocean. Whatever a man imagines, he can achieve.

Charles Lindbergh

The redwoods, once seen, leave a mark or create a vision that stays with you always. No one has ever successfully painted or photographed a redwood tree. The feeling they produce is not transferable. From them comes silence and awe. It’s not only their unbelievable stature, nor the color which seems to shift and vary under your eyes, no, they are not like any trees we know, they are ambassadors from another time.

John Steinbeck, Travels with Charley: In Search of America

There can be nothing in the world more beautiful than the Yosemite, the groves of the giant sequoias and redwoods, the Canyon of the Colorado, the Canyon of the Yellowstone, the Three Tetons; and our people should see to it that they are preserved for their children and their children’s children forever, with their majestic beauty all unmarred. A grove of giant redwood or sequoias should be kept just as we keep a great and beautiful cathedral.

Theodore Roosevelt

I love the example of redwood trees. Redwood trees don’t have deep roots. If a single redwood tree is standing alone and a strong wind blows, the tree can be knocked down because it is so tall and its roots are so shallow. However, redwood trees in a redwood forest interweave their roots together. Their roots are still shallow, but because their roots are intertwined with each other, those trees become very strong together, and it is much harder for the wind to knock them down. This is an example of strength in unity.

Sequoia seeds have flat wings, and glint and glance in their flight like a boy’s kite.

John Muir

Beneath the surface of these humongous, tall, statuesque [Sequoia] trees are roots like a army of men who have their arms interlocked, standing and supporting each other. They are preventing the adversaries of life from knocking each other down. They are also making sure there is plenty of nutrients for growth to continue.

John Maxwell
