Classic Tales of True Love: Women, Snow White, & Falling in Love

If you grew up watching Disney movies, it might be natural for you to believe in classic tales of true love. In a world with rapidly changing views of love and relationships, it’s time we ask ourselves a few questions:

Once Upon a Dream

** This post was written by a 19-year-old young woman and shared here with her permission.

As a little girl, I always dreamed of being saved from the evil enemy by a handsome prince.

I dreamed of falling in love, and being saved by true love’s kiss.

Of being able to sing songs like “So This Is Love” “Some Day My Prince Will Come” and “Once Upon a Dream”.

I saw a post the other day about the new Snow White movie remake.

Rachel Zelger, the actress who will play Snow White in the Disney remake, shared what the movie will be like:

“It’s not 1937 anymore… She will not be saved by the prince and will not dream of true love. She will dream of becoming the leader she knows she can be. I think young people all over the world will be reflected in her.”

I was disappointed to say the least. But surprised? No.

We live in a world today that is pushing the “Girl Boss” ideology.

That women don’t need men, that women are better off on their own.

That accepting help from a man, (or being saved by a man) is demeaning, sexist, and even embarrassing.

They say women are strong, and that accepting help from a man makes them less so.

But when you look at some of the older fairytales, you don’t get that story.

Disney Princesses

Cinderella lives with a cruel step mother and two mean step sisters, but she is always kind, patient, and turns the other cheek.

Snow White runs into the woods with only the clothes on her back to make a new life for herself, away from the evil, jealous queen.

Belle faces a life with the angry Beast, to take the place of her ill father.

Aurora lives most of her life hidden away, but she is happy and cheerful.

A Christian Perspective

Jesus said:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted; and blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

He continued:

Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy; and blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

And finally:

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

True Strength

Don’t these princesses fit this description?

Each princess is innocent, kind, cheerful, meek, and pure in heart.

They are truly strong.

They aren’t girl bosses trying to pull their way to the top.

Each one is a young women who knows who they are, and what is most important.

Another common factor?

They are all saved by a Prince in some way.

Does that make them any less strong?

Of course not! True strength is knowing when you need help, and being willing to ask for it, if necessary.

A Dream Worth Having

And as for love?

Love is the purest form of strength!

It is vulnerability, trust, and kindness, all rolled into one.

Why are we teaching this generation that true love is something they shouldn’t dream of?

What is going to happen to all the young women who fall into this “girl boss” way of living?

Are we teaching our precious little girls that they don’t need anyone?

That they can do anything they want, but it must be on their own, without help from anyone?

That being saved by a boy makes them weak?

Won’t that make us more likely to forget that without the Prince of Peace, we could do nothing? Be nothing?

Jesus Christ is the one that has saved us from the ultimate evil enemy.

His sacrifice and death is the ultimate form of true love.

Do I feel weak knowing that He saved me? No! I feel empowered! It’s what gets me through the hard days.

Classic Tales of True Love

I know I’m going to teach my little girls that it is a wonderful thing to have a prince come to your rescue.

Remember when I said I dreamed of a handsome Prince as a little girl?

Well…

Some dreams never die.

Note:

Prince Phillip fought the dragon to save Aurora by using the Shield of Virtue and the Sword of Truth. Coincidence? I don’t think so.
